Maybe I shouldn’t start a stock picking business just yet. Because as I pull the truck into the precinct's lot, I see no signs of anything strange.

I check the time.

It's five in the morning.

Could be that the welcome party is still asleep. Or out at Crescent Mountain.

Or maybe it’s limited to a handful of boneheads on both forces. Javy did say they were cleaning things up ever since Reynolds was arrested.

But you don’t clean out years of corruption in weeks.

"Help me with this clowns," I say, jerking my thumb toward the back.

Finn says, "They seemed pretty adamant."

"Unless you have a jail cell lurking in Miranda's thrift shop, then we don't really have much of a choice, do we?"

"Point taken." Finn climbs out of the truck.

Manny and Brad wrestle with us a bit, but blanche when they realize where they are.

"You're making a mistake," Manny says, his caterpillar mustache climbing up his face as it contorts in fear. "Trust me."

"I'll pass on that."

I shove him forward and we go inside.

The night attendant is a new guy who I don't recognize.

He's clicking away the computer. When he turns toward me, he does a double-take.

His hand immediately goes to his holster.

"F-freeze."

"Easy, rookie." I put the cuff key on the desk. "I'm a licensed PI. I caught these two taking bribes."

"I said—"

"I heard you," I say and nod toward Finn. "Here's the paperwork."

Finn places the envelope slowly on the counter.

The desk attendant doesn't lower his gun. "You need to uncuff these officers immediately."

After the night I've had, this barely gets my pulse moving. "Look me up in the database first."

"I gave you a direct command."

"And just think about what a jackass you're going to look like during your first review when it's on your jacket. Let two corrupt cops go. Yeah, that one's gonna stick for the next twenty years. But I figure you'll wash out in five, tops."

The young cop bites his lip and then reaches for the folder. His finger is dangerously close to the trigger.

Enough of this shit.

I reach out, jerk his wrist, and disarm him.

Then I unload the magazine and pop the chambered round out into the air.

I catch it with a dry smile. "You could hurt something with this."

The rookie trembles. I place the mag and the pistol on the counter.

Closer to me than him, but that's just so he doesn't accidentally shoot me in the head while he's wetting himself.

"Uh, so what name am I looking up in the system?"

"Tess Skye. Got fired about a year ago. Brought down Stella Reynolds. And then found Emmy Davis a couple weeks ago."

His head swivels toward me. "You're—you're Tess Skye?"

"The one and only."

"You don't look like your picture."

"And you're not as handsome as your mom has probably led you to believe," I say. "Now can we book these assholes so I can take a shower?"

He nods and says, "I just need you to fill out some paperwork."

Of course. The paperwork.

That's the only thing that I don't miss about being a cop.

Then again, I could've gone back, but I said no.
